Course Overview

 

The Health and Safety Executive has identified that 4.9 million working days are lost to business each year due to back pain at an annual cost to the economy of £5 billion. (Source HSE) It has been identified that with the correct use of handling aids, or changes in the way people work, can make a difference to these figures. This course introduces candidates to the hazards and risks involved in manual handling and outlines what to expect from a manual handling assessment. It will enable employees to develop safer manual handling techniques in the workplace.

Any employee/person(s) who are required to carry out manual handling tasks within the scope of any working activity they are employed to do.

·       Manual Handling Hazards: types of injury/harm

·       Functions of the musculoskeletal system

·       Mechanics of movement

·       Legal responsibilities

·       Information, instruction and training

·       Risk assessment

·       Manual handling assessments; recording and reviewing

·       Controls and reducing the risk of harm; Hierarchy of control

·       Recognising individuals’ capabilities

·       Planning and preparing

·       Manual handling controls

·       Team handling

·       Video presentation

·       Theoretical Assessment - one hour - 30 MCQ ---

·       Practical Assessment – continual assessment by tutor throughout the afternoon practical sessions (techniques involving lifting from low levels; working from height; lowering from height; pushing; pulling; carrying on shoulder; team handling.)Tutor demonstrations followed by practice and assessment

Course Objectives

 

·     To be able to state the health and safety responsibilities of both the company and the employee

·     To be able to define manual handling

·      Understand the causes of common injuries

·      Identify the hazards of poor manual handling

·      Understand appropriate actions that can be taken to reduce risk from manual handling injuries

·      Explain the mechanics of movement such as stability, force and levers

·      To understand the need for a manual handling risk assessment prior  to moving an object and control measures

·      To recognise the importance of preparation and planning a manual handling operation

 

Course Durations

 

Manual Handling - Principles and Practice is conducted for a maximum of 20 delegates per course.

Duration: 1 Day (The first part of this course is taken up with the Principles in a theory morning session; The Practices

is a practical afternoon session.) To complete the full qualification delegates have to attend both sessions.
